I-DEAS NX is a top-level design or CAD system. Design systems organically combine the design and analysis processes in the Unified Complex. During their use, it does not occur with the creation of a complex and mathematically accurate model of the product, since only these systems have the most powerful means of geometric modeling.
The exchange between the design subsystems (CAD), analysis (CAE) and technological preparation of the production (CAM) is practically invisible for the user, since the subsystems operate with one database or have internal data formats. The composition of various types of analysis is limited compared to the composition of universal programs and is mainly designed to solve such tasks as structural analysis, linear static analysis, modal analysis (calculation of own frequencies, kinematic motion parameters), thermal analysis, resistant state analysis (linear convection, linear stability), etc.

Engineering analysis using the design system is usually made on the basis of the method of finite elements or end differences and consists of the following main steps:
• initial (pre-processor) preparation;
• calculation, obtaining results (processor stage);
• Processing modeling results (postprocessor analysis).
The I-DEAS NX system is the top-level CAD, as well as Unigraphics NX, is a complex automated design system and includes CAD, CAM, CAE components.
To solve design design tasks, CAD is used by the I-DEAS NX component, which includes the following main applications:
• Design - Development of three-dimensional models of parts and assemblies of structures;
• Drafting - formation of drawings according to three-dimensional models.
Three-dimensional design models developed in Design applications are used further in the CAE component I-DEAS NX. CAE component - the Simulation application is intended for settlements for strength, hoping, acoustic effects, durability, effects of thermal regimes, carrying out the optimization of structures, etc.
CAE Part I-DEAS NX includes the following components:
• I-DEAS NX MASTERFEM (Simulation application modules with their own solver);
• I-DEAS NX with the NX NASTRAN clerk - a full-featured package for the preparation, execution and presentation of the calculation results.
