Unashamedly a book for the bookish, yet accessible and frequently entertaining, this is the first book devoted to how libraries are depicted in imaginative writing. Covering fiction, poetry, and drama from the late Middle Ages to the present, it runs the gamut of British and American literature, as well as examining a range of fiction in other languages-from Rabelais and Cervantes to modern and contemporary French, Italian, Japanese, and Russian writing.

Liberty and Equality (Philosophical Reflections on a Free Society) By Tibor R. Machan
2002 | 132 Pages | ISBN: 0817928626 | PDF | 1 MB
The Declaration of Independence asserts that "all men are created equal"-but in what way are we equal? Does this mean that we all have a right to the same rewards and benefits society has to offer? Or that every time an individual achieves something beyond what has been accomplished by others, he must give it up-along with, as would naturally follow, his personal freedom and autonomy? Liberty and Equality takes an unflinching look at the difficult, often emotional issues that arise when egalitarianism collides with individual liberties. Personal autonomy, the contributors show, is sharply at odds with the "coercive egalitarianism" championed by many today. Through well-researched arguments, they offer their insightful views on the most important aspects of this often controversial issue. They examine the history of equality versus autonomy from ancient times through the present day, showing how it has become central to modern political and social debate, and explain why we all have a general right to liberty-but not a fundamental right to equality. Machan and his contributors clearly illustrate why the kind of egalitarianism preached by socialists and other sentimentalists is ultimately not an option in a free society, exposing its very real consequences. For example, they show how the advocacy of economic equality in any absolute sense would lead to a severe loss in economic benefits for all-and they reveal the potentially disastrous social and political changes that could occur if contemporary feminists attained the full "equality" they desire from society. Concluding on a more hopeful note, they explain how a different conception of liberty and equality might eliminate the tension between the two and allow the ideals of both to coexist in today's society.

Liberating Language: Sites of Rhetorical Education in Nineteenth-Century Black America By Shirley Wilson Logan
2008 | 224 Pages | ISBN: 0809328720 | PDF | 3 MB
Liberating Language identifies experiences of nineteenth-century African Americans-categorized as sites of rhetorical education-that provided opportunities to develop effective communication and critical text-interpretation skills. Author Shirley Wilson Logan considers how nontraditional sites, which seldom involved formal training in rhetorical instruction, proved to be effective resources for African American advancement. Logan traces the ways that African Americans learned lessons in rhetoric through language-based activities associated with black survival in nineteenth-century America, such as working in political organizations, reading and publishing newspapers, maintaining diaries, and participating in literary societies. According to Logan, rhetorical training was manifested through places of worship and military camps, self-education in oratory and elocution, literary societies, and the black press. She draws on the experiences of various black rhetors of the era, such asFrederick Douglass, Frances Harper, Fanny Coppin, Charles Chesnutt, Ida B. Wells, and the lesser-known Oberlin-educated Mary Virginia Montgomery, Virginia slave preacher "Uncle Jack," and former slave "Mrs. Lee."Liberating Language addresses free-floating literacy, a term coined by scholar and writer Ralph Ellison, which captures the many settings where literacy and rhetorical skills were acquired and developed, including slave missions, religious gatherings, war camps, and even cigar factories. In Civil War camp- sites, for instance, black soldiers learned to read and write, corresponded with the editors of black newspapers, edited their own camp-based papers, and formed literary associations. Liberating Language outlines nontraditional means of acquiring rhetorical skills and demonstrates how African Americans, faced with the lingering consequences of enslavement and continuing oppression, acquired rhetorical competence during the late eighteenth century and throughout the nineteenth century.

Liberalism: The Genius of American Ideals By Marcus G. Raskin
2003 | 344 Pages | ISBN: 0742515907 | PDF | 21 MB
Contrary to those who believe that liberalism has descended into the dustbins of history, renowned political activist and social critic Marcus G. Raskin argues that there is no escape from liberalism. Against the empty headed and mean spirited conservative onslaught of recent times, Raskin asserts and ably demonstrates how the liberal purpose is tied to human liberation and inclusivity for all people. For liberalism to succeed in a new century, it must reckon with its past mistakes--especially its reluctance to be bold. It must also embrace the inextricably interwoven character of morality and politics. To this end, Raskin seeks no less than a new intellectual and spiritual covenant in the university, the political economy, and foreign policy. He shows how this is possible through a radical rethinking of America's role in the world including war avoidance and economic restructuring. He probes the tensions and limits as well as the promise of community, family, and technology. He helps us to recognize the potential of a new multiculturalism within American society and the important role that knowledge workers and specialists will play as change agents in a changed world. Liberalism:The Genius of American Ideals traces Raskin's remarkable journey of the last 50 years through social and political action as well as thought. It is a book for people _in motion_ who realize the importance of humane ideas in relation to action, aware that it is not only that peace should be given a chance but that our best instincts must also be engaged through the reconstruction of our institutions. In the face of a new, distinctly uncompassionate brand of conservatism that has shuttered the doors to the very real world of struggle, alienation, and pain, Liberalism is intended to hold out a candle in the window of this dark time.
