Annette begins her story as a young girl of eight. She details how her early carefree life is upended by the arrival of German troops and recalls how the occupation shaped her life and the life of her family. The emotions of love, hate, fear, trust, and faith provide a thread that weaves stories of the occupation together while helping one to understand the heart, mind, and soul of a young French girl during this era. Upon the landing of Allied troops in Normandy and the western drive of Patton through Le Mans, life for Annette and her family is altered forever by the chance meeting of an American soldier.
