In 2016, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, will mark its 250th anniversary. Chartered in 1766 as the all-male Queen's College in New Brunswick, New Jersey, the school was renamed Rutgers College in 1825 to honor Revolutionary War veteran and trustee Colonel Henry Rutgers. Rutgers's history begins in the political maelstrom of colonial America; hurtles through the Civil War, the Industrial Revolution, and two world wars; wrestles with social upheaval in the late twentieth-century; and emerges in the current fast-paced global digital age.
