This book is a synstactic study of the structural relation holding between the notion of «government», on the one hand, and structural Case assignment and direct theta-marking, on the other hand. Since the latter processes practically depend on government, I refer to them as aspects of the latter notion following Chomsky (1981; 1982; and 1986b). This investigation is mainly conducted within the broad Government and Binding framework, but it also extrapolates from the views of traditional Arab grammarians. Further, this study is restricted to Standard Arabic data, but occosional allusions to other natural languages are made for comparative reasons.
Furthermore, this study accounts for the derivation of two word orders, manely, VSO and Inc VSO, as this issue is related to the subject matter of this thesis.
