Although there was a substantial Jewish population in Western Europe from at least the first century BC, literary evidence for it before the end of the sixth century AD is very sparse, amounting to a few mainly hostile references by Roman writers and some material of doubtful historical value in rabbinic and hagiographic sources. Knowledge of the Jewish communities of the West is therefore almost entirely dependent on inscriptions, which contain information on community organisation, the use of biblical texts and religious symbols, linguistic habits, naming practices and social status, and burial customs and beliefs about life after death. This volume, the first of a two volume work, provides ready access to the Jewish inscriptions from Italy and the islands, Spain, France and Germany. Volume 2 concentrates on the inscriptions of the City of Rome. Hitherto it has been necessary to consult specialist publications to gain a complete picture of the inscriptions: this book fills a notable gap in the market.

Leberecht Migge gilt als einer der ersten Pioniere der Selbstversorgung. Mit seinen Ideen versuchte er bereits sehr früh, die Selbstversorgung als Gesellschaftsform zu etablieren. Bereits nach dem 1. Welt-krieg schrieb er seine Ideen und Theorien sehr detailliert nieder. Mit der Erfahrung der Mangelwirtschaft während des 1. Weltkriegs und seiner Profession als Gartenbauer, konnte Migge mit dem Werk „Jedermann Selbstversorger!" aus dem Jahr 1918 eine erste Konzeption liefern. Migges Konzepte waren nicht theoretischer Natur. Vielmehr grenzte er sich von den Wissenschaften bewusst ab und nahm Bezug auf seine Erfahrungen und dem zu seiner Zeit geltenden anerkannten Stand des Wissens. Weiterhin nahm er auch Bezug auf andere, die sich mit der Selbstversorgung befassten, mit deren Ideen und Konzepten Migges Thesen ergänzten und bekräftigten oder ernäh-rungswissenschaftlich Grundlagen lieferten. Leberecht Migge ist 1935 wegen eines Nierenleidens früh verstorben. Sein literarisches Werk ist seit 2005 gemeinfrei. Das bedeutet, es gibt kein Urheberrecht im Sinne der aktuellen Rechtsauffassung. „Jedermann Selbstversorger!" ist gemeinfrei und für jeden verfügbar. Die hier vorliegende Fassung erweitert jedoch das Ursprungswerk beachtlich: Neben dem Originaltext, der aus der Fraktur-Schrift in die heutige Schrift und Rechtschreibung überführt bzw. bereinigt wurde, sind Kommentare und Ergänzungen aufgeführt. Es sind mehrere Kapitel entstanden, die das Originalwerk ergänzen. Sie entsprechen dem heutigen Stand des Wissens insbesondere in Bezug auf Ernährung und Selbstversorgung. Damit liegt ein Werk vor, dass der heutigen Zeit entspricht ohne das Original zu verfälschen. Weiterhin liegt eine kurze Biografie von Leberecht Migge vor. Es wird sein Wirken nähergebracht, um das Werk in dessen Kontext besser nachzuvollziehen. Der geschichtliche Kontext und die Bewertung des Buchs findet eine gesonderte Betrachtung und macht dieses Buch komplett. Freue Dich sich nun, auf ein 100 Jahre altes Buch, dessen Ideen und Konzepte heute nicht aktueller sein können!
