E-BooksIn Other Words Transpositions of Philosophy in J.M. Coetzee's 'Jesus' Trilogy

In Other Words Transpositions of Philosophy in J.M. Coetzee's 'Jesus' Trilogy
Stephen Mulhall, "In Other Words: Transpositions of Philosophy in J.M. Coetzee's 'Jesus' Trilogy"
English | ISBN: 019286971X | 2023 | 138 pages | MOBI | 545 KB
J. M. Coetzee's 'Jesus' Trilogy extends and intensifies his long-term interest in engaging with a wide range of texts, themes and assumptions that help constitute the history of Western European philosophy. In this commentary, Stephen Mulhall extends his own earlier work on Coetzee's previous stagings of the ancient quarrel between philosophy and literature by identifying and following out various ways in which the 'Jesus' Trilogy activates and interrogates themes drawn from Wittgenstein's later philosophy. These themes include rival conceptions of counting and reading, the relation between concepts and wider forms of life, and the intertwined fate of philosophy, literature and religion in a resolutely secular world. In these ways, Wittgenstein's, and so Coetzee's, visions of the world disclose their uncanny intimacy with issues and values central to the critique of modernity elaborated in the work of Nietzsche, Heidegger, and Sartre.

E-BooksIn God's Path The Arab Conquests and the Creation of an Islamic Empire (MOBI)

In God's Path The Arab Conquests and the Creation of an Islamic Empire (MOBI)
Robert G. Hoyland, "In God's Path: The Arab Conquests and the Creation of an Islamic Empire "
English | ISBN: 0199916365 | 2014 | 320 pages | MOBI | 11 MB
In just over a hundred years-from the death of Muhammad in 632 to the beginning of the Abbasid Caliphate in 750-the followers of the Prophet swept across the whole of the Middle East, North Africa, and Spain. Their armies threatened states as far flung as the Franks in Western Europe and the Tang Empire in China. The conquered territory was larger than the Roman Empire at its greatest expansion, and it was claimed for the Arabs in roughly half the time. How this collection of Arabian tribes was able to engulf so many empires, states, and armies in such a short period has perplexed historians for centuries. Most accounts of the Arab invasions have been based almost solely on the early Muslim sources, which were composed centuries later to illustrate the divinely chosen status of the Arabs.

Implications of Artificial Intelligence-Related Data Center Electricity Use and Emissions: Proceedings of a Workshop
English | 2026 | ISBN: 9780309992077 | 118 pages | True PDF,EPUB | 4.98 MB
In recent years, the global adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) has spurred significant construction and investment in new data centers and cloud computing. These data centers require large-scale continuous power, posing challenges for local electric grids and broader climate goals. To explore how to map, measure, and mitigate the impacts of AI data center electricity usage, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine convened the workshop Implications of Artificial Intelligence-Related Data Center Electricity Use and Emissions in Washington, DC, on November 12-13, 2024. Organized through the National Academies Roundtable on Artificial Intelligence and Climate Change, the event gathered more than 95 in-person and more than 350 virtual participants from academia, the technology industry, electric utilities, community advocacy groups, and government agencies to discuss how recent AI developments could impact energy demands, identify options to mitigate increased electricity use and emissions, and consider regional implications related to data center siting and renewable resource availability. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussion of the workshop.
