E-BooksModeling the Possible

Modeling the Possible
Tarja Knuuttila, "Modeling the Possible "
English | ISBN: 1032379642 | 2025 | 296 pages | EPUB | 1058 KB
Models are used to explore possibilities across all scientific fields. Climate models simulate the potential future climatic conditions under various emissions scenarios, macroeconomic models investigate the implications of various fiscal and monetary policy initiatives, and infectious diseases models study the spread of viral diseases under a range of conditions. Such modeling approaches have not gone ignored by philosophers of science, but they have only recently started to explicitly address modeling the possible. So far, the discussion has been spread across a variety of more or less isolated pockets of debate in the philosophy of science. Modeling the Possible: Perspectives from Philosophy of Science draws together these studies, focusing specifically on how various modeling practices probe possibilities and justify claims concerning them.

E-BooksModel Induction from Data Towards the next generation of computational engines in hydraulics and hydrology

Model Induction from Data Towards the next generation of computational engines in hydraulics and hydrology
Model Induction from dаta: Towards the next generation of computational engines in hydraulics and hydrology
English | 2002 | ISBN: 9781003760290 | 157 pages | True PDF,EPUB | 26.67 MB
There has been an explosive growth of methods in recent years for learning (or estimating dependency) from data, where data refers to known samples that are combinations of inputs and corresponding outputs of a given physical system. The main subject addressed in this thesis is model induction from data for the simulation of hydrodynamic processes in the aquatic environment. Firstly, some currently popular artificial neural network architectures are introduced, and it is then argued that these devices can be regarded as domain knowledge incapsulators by applying the method to the generation of wave equations from hydraulic data and showing how the equations of numerical-hydraulic models can, in their turn, be recaptured using artificial neural networks. The book also demonstrates how artificial neural networks can be used to generate numerical operators on non-structured grids for the simulation of hydrodynamic processes in two-dimensional flow systems and a methodology has been derived for developing generic hydrodynamic models using artificial neural network. The book also highlights one other model induction technique, namely that of support vector machine, as an emerging new method with a potential to provide more robust models.

E-BooksMinority Memory, Identity, and Reconciliation The Turkish Muslim Minority of Greece and the Greek Orthodox Minority of Türkiye

Minority Memory, Identity, and Reconciliation The Turkish Muslim Minority of Greece and the Greek Orthodox Minority of Türkiye
Gül M Gür, "Minority Memory, Identity, and Reconciliation: The Turkish Muslim Minority of Greece and the Greek Orthodox Minority of Türkiye"
English | ISBN: 0472077457 | 2025 | 276 pages | EPUB | 889 KB
Migration and minority rights are increasingly at the forefront of global discourse. Minority Memory, Identity, and Reconciliation explores the lives of two often overlooked minority communities: the Greek Orthodox minority in Istanbul, Türkiye, and the Turkish Muslim minority in Western Thrace, Greece. As empires dissolved, the leaders and political elites of new, smaller nations that emerged embarked on population exchanges to increase the ethnic and religious homogeneity of their nation-states. Although these two minority communities differ in religious, ethnic, and socioeconomic terms, they both offer unique perspectives on what happens to people who live on what is perceived as the wrong side of an arbitrarily drawn border.
