E-BooksRemembered Words Essays on Genre, Realism, and Emblems

Remembered Words Essays on Genre, Realism, and Emblems
Alastair Fowler, "Remembered Words: Essays on Genre, Realism, and Emblems"
English | ISBN: 0198856970 | 2021 | 320 pages | AZW3 | 1361 KB
Remembered Words is a selection of Alastair Fowler's essays on genre, realism, and the emblem (three interrelated subjects), published over six decades. It offers readers a way to arrive at a sense of how approaches to these subjects have changed over that period. Specifically, it shows how genre has come to be understood in terms of family resemblance theory. Remembered Words argues that realism can be seen as altering historically, so that Renaissance realism, for example, differs from those of later periods. Similar changes are traced in the emblem, which Fowler shows to be not only a particular genre, but an element of various kinds of realism. Famous passages in ancient literature are remembered in the familiar emblems of the Renaissance; and Renaissance emblems form the basis of metaphors in later literature.

E-BooksReligion in the Market Era

Religion in the Market Era
François Gauthier, "Religion in the Market Era "
English | ISBN: 0367682214 | 2025 | 352 pages | EPUB | 1426 KB
This book aims to expand the limits of the social-scientific study of religion and define a coherent model of recent global transformations of religion, challenging the paradigm of secularisation and post-secularisation. Using a wide-ranging selection of case studies, including global Islam, post-Soviet Eastern Europe, and China, the author argues that since the 1980s, religion has been dramatically shaped around the world by neoliberalism and consumerism. Providing a global, macro-level history of how religion has changed in the past four decades, this book contends that the rise of economics as a dominant social sphere is central to understanding the ongoing changes in contemporary world religions.

E-BooksReliabilism and its Rivals

Reliabilism and its Rivals
Bob Beddor, "Reliabilism and its Rivals "
English | ISBN: 1009645455 | 2026 | 75 pages | PDF | 4 MB
According to reliabilism, whether a belief is justified is a matter of whether it was reliably formed. Reliabilism is one of the leading theories of justification, and it holds important explanatory advantages: it sheds light on the connection between justification and truth, and it offers to situate justification within a naturalistic worldview. However, reliabilism faces well-known problems. One promising strategy for overcoming these problems is to modify reliabilism, combining it with elements of views that have been traditionally regarded as rivals, such as evidentialism. This Element offers an opinionated survey of the prospects for reliabilist epistemology, paying particular attention to recent reliabilist-evidentialist hybrid views.

E-BooksRegulating Interracialized Intimacies

Regulating Interracialized Intimacies
Elena Zambelli, "Regulating Interracialized Intimacies "
English | ISBN: 1032583770 | 2025 | 300 pages | EPUB | 997 KB
This book explores the role of the law in the social construction of 'race' and 'mixture' within and beyond the borders of Europe. It focuses on 'interracialized' intimacies, that is, the intimate relations of subjects ascribed and/or perceived to belong to different 'races'. The role of the state in defining boundaries between 'us' and 'them' becomes particularly clear in their regulation. Moving across different times, places and political formations - including the US slavery regime, European colonial empires and metropolises - the book delves deep into how the governments of white-supremacist and white-majority societies have consistently attempted to prevent, discourage or obstruct intimate relationships crossing the colour line. This occurred directly, through prohibitions and anti-miscegenation laws, or indirectly, through citizenship laws, marriage licenses, social care, prostitution laws, housing policies, policing practices and other means. The book further shows that the legacy of these highly gendered and racialized regulations continues to reverberate today, informing norms, hierarchies and perceptions about whose intimacies count as legitimate and ought to be facilitated and whose are deemed suspect and requiring state surveillance. The contributions also shed light on the individuals, couples and families who were targeted by state regulations and how they challenged and disturbed state categorizations and regulations.

E-BooksRedeeming the Kamasutra

Redeeming the Kamasutra
Wendy Doniger, "Redeeming the Kamasutra"
English | ISBN: 0190499281 | 2016 | 184 pages | MOBI | 1279 KB
The Kamasutra, composed in the third century CE, is the world's most famous textbook of erotic love. There is nothing remotely like it even today, and for its time it was astonishingly sophisticated. Yet it is all but ignored as a serious work in its country of origin-sometimes taken as a matter of national shame rather than pride - and in the rest of the world it is a source of amused amazement and inspires magazine articles that offer "mattress-quaking sex styles" such as "the backstairs boogie" and "the spider web".
