The beloved New York Times best-selling author reflects on home, family, friendships, and writing in this deeply personal collection of essays. "Any story that starts will also end." Life, however, often takes turns we do not see coming. Patchett ponders this truth in these wise essays that afford a fresh and intimate look into her mind and heart. At the center of These Precious Days is the title essay, a surprising and moving meditation on an unexpected friendship that explores "what it means to be seen, to find someone with whom you can be your best and most complete self."

A celebrated foreign-policy expert and key impeachment witness reveals how declining opportunity has set America on the grim path of modern Russia - and draws on her personal journey out of poverty, and her unique perspectives as a historian and policy maker, to show how we can return hope to our forgotten places. Fiona Hill grew up in a world of terminal decay. The last of the local mines had closed, businesses were shuttering, and despair was etched in the faces around her. Her father urged her to get out of their blighted corner of Northern England: "There is nothing for you here, pet," he said.

A provocative theory of the gimmick as an aesthetic category steeped in the anxieties of capitalism. Repulsive and yet strangely attractive, the gimmick is a form that can be found virtually everywhere in capitalism. It comes in many guises: a musical hook, a financial strategy, a striptease, a novel of ideas. Above all, acclaimed theorist Sianne Ngai argues, the gimmick strikes us both as working too little (a labor-saving trick) and as working too hard (a strained effort to get our attention).

Theatre of the Mind traces its origins to Dr. Maxwell Maltz - a world-famous plastic surgeon who discovered the incredible power that existed in a person's self-image. Through his research, he realized that the real source of people's issues and concerns was not of their outward physical appearance, but how they thought about themselves. Dr. Maltz's principles of Psycho-Cybernetics have inspired and enhanced the lives of more than 30 million people throughout the world.

The Day My Vagina Broke' follows one woman's journey to becoming a mumma and how she had no idea childbirth could break your vagina... and you. Once you're pregnant the rest is easy right? No. Knowing parenting wouldn't be easy, Stephanie Thompson never thought too much about how the baby would actually arrive, and how that was, in fact, the hardest part of the journey so far. Many women feel foolish for not knowing what they didn't know; they found out the hard way. 'The Day My Vagina Broke' is about breaking the silence on the secret women's code around childbirth and empowering mums-to-be at their most vulnerable time. After going through her own tough childbirth experience, Stephanie wants other mothers to be informed about all birthing methods and be empowered to decide which method is best for their individual needs, not what they hear or read as being the 'best'. This book builds a sisterhood of support by taking away the pressure and judgement so many women place on themselves and others. While this is a tough subject, 'The Day My Vagina Broke' also provides hope for those who have been through a difficult birth and shows that you can still enjoy that wonderful moment you meet your baby for the first time.

Dr. Carey was a homeopath who believed that cell-salts - naturally occurring minerals - were necessary to supplement deficiencies in the human body, thus curing disease and ailments. Dr. Carey's unique contribution to the field of biochemistry was to connect each of the twelve cell-salts with a particular sign of the Zodiac. While Dr. Carey's work on mineral salts and the Zodiac is foundational, it is also largely theoretical. After Dr. Carey's death in 1924, collaborator Inez Eudora Perry republished "The Relation of Mineral Salts to the Body and to the Signs of the Zodiac", and supplemented it with an additional work of her own that expounded on Dr. Carey's ideas. The resulting work was published in 1932 as The Zodiac and the Salts of Salvation. Perry's contribution is titled An Esoteric Analysis and Synthesis of the Zodiacal Signs and their Physiochemical Allocations. Part two is much longer than part one, with thorough explanations of both the symbolism and practical uses of each cell-salt. She also explores more thoroughly the connection of the Zodiac to the body of man - comparing the macrocosm of the universe to the microcosm of the human body.
